SEISMIC ALERT SYSTEM OF OAXACA

BACKGROUND

The city of Oaxaca has suffered the effect of strong earthquakes that occurs at north and south of the central valley, also the movements that causes some deep earthquakes generated in the isthmus region. The distribution of the oaxacan seismic danger and its proximity to the urban zone of the capital city, has required SASO to use efficient methods to recognize and alert in a clear way the beginning of the earthquakes that may have a destructive potential over the population.

Seismic activity in Oaxaca from 2001 to 2003

DESCRIPTION

SASO

Distribution of the Sensor Stations of SASO

The depth of the seismic focus in Oaxaca are variable, some earthquakes start further than Km under ground in the north region of the state, while in the coast strip, the most superficial may occur in a depth smaller than 20 km. The function of a seismic alert system is optimal when the seismic sensors achieve to recognize the beginning of an earthquake in its epicenter. During 2003 the CIRES beginning the design and instrumentation of the Seismic Alert System of Oaxaca, SASO; that has 36 stations.

FUNCTIONING

On june 14th, 2004, SASO managed to anticipate the effect of an earthquake that occurred at 17:54:23 hrs, with its epicenter near to Puerto Escondido, 29 seconds. The effect of this movement was also registered in Mexico city. Once the function of SAS and SASO are integrated, the early warning service will have an important improvement.
